The Rice Diet is a low fat, low sodium and primarily vegetarian eating plan. It consists of two phases. The Rice Diet is not a rice based-eating plan; it is a medically supervised weight loss program for rapid weight reduction, designed by Duke University for the treatment of obesity, diabetes and raised blood pressure (hypertension). Patients from all over the world visit the Rice Diet center in Durham, NC, for the treatment of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and renal disease. In addition to planned calorie controlled meals, patients are attended daily by medical staff, and may participate in daily stress management, yoga, group therapy, and nutritional lectures.
